Crafting To Relieve Stress

I am a busy mom, which makes it exceptionally difficult to relax. A few years ago, I realized that I needed a creative outlet for my stress, and so I started crafting. Every week, I would choose a project around the house to fix up. It was fun to add crown molding to my bathroom, to make a wreath for my front door, and to design holiday decorations for my home. I wanted to create a fun-filled blog where other moms could glean inspiration. Check out these articles for ideas that might help you to make something special and truly customized for your home.

6 Kid-Friendly Projects With A Skein Of Chenille Yarn

by Silvia Soto

Chenille yarn is an excellent crafting medium: it is soft as butter and it works up quickly. This bulky yarn is widely available- often on sale- and is easy for small fingers to maneuver during crafting, knitting, or crocheting. If you have a skein of soft chenille yarn in your stash, consider pulling it out for a fun afternoon or weekend.

Six kid-friendly projects for a skein of chenille yarn are:

1. God's Eye

Anyone who has been to summer sleepaway camp has probably made a God's Eye- or two! These are easy to make, fast to work up, and great for using up scraps of yarn. Simply weave the yarn around two joined sticks, typically popsicle-style sticks. You can also turn them into tiny turtles by drawing a face and feet on the ends of the sticks.

2. Paper Towel Owl

Another great use for chenille yarn is to make fuzzy paper towel owls. These also require empty paper towel or toilet paper tubes and markers or pens. Simply wrap the yarn around the tube, leaving the top of the tube so it can be pushed in to form ears. It is fun to make a family of these owls for a shelf or display.

3. Plush Apples

If you can make pompoms, you can make plush apples. These apples only require yarn, a piece of cardboard, and some pipe cleaners to replicate the stems. You wrap the cardboard in the same way you would when you start a pompom- but don't cut it free. Instead, tie the strands and keep the yarn together to form the body of the apple. These are fun to make in the fall.

4. Wrapped Letters

Another great idea for chenille yarn is to wrap cardboard cut-outs, like letters, words, or names. Simply cut out the letters and then use yarn to wrap and cover the cardboard. These can be hung on a wall or propped on a shelf for fun room décor. Use a dot or two of hot glue to keep the yarn ends in place and keep them from unwinding.

5. Yarn Dolls

Use yarn to create braided yarn dolls- simple and satisfying! Use a piece of cardboard as tall as you want your doll to be and wrap yarn around it until you have formed the body. The key is to braid and tie off the appendages of the doll. Check out the easy online tutorials that outline the project simply. All that you need to make these cute dolls is yarn and scissors.

6. Dandelion Bouquet

If you have yellow chenille yarn in your stash, make a beautiful bouquet of dandelions. These are surprisingly realistic looking when grouped in a vase, and they are as easy to make as a pompom or the previously mentioned plush apple. Green chenille craft sticks or pipe cleaners make the perfect stems.

Get kids interested and vested in these projects by letting them pick out their own colors of chenille yarn, either online or at your favorite crafting store. Consider these fast and fun projects with your children this weekend!
